What is the Donghae1 Floating Offshore Wind Farm project?

KNOC is launching a floating offshore wind farm project, utilizing the jacket structure of gas production platform, Donghae 1, which ceased its gas production by end of 2021. Donghae 1 is the first floating offshore wind farm project in Korea, reusing the existing gas production platform jacket as the substructure of this project enclosed by numbers of floating turbines, which will produce 780,000 MWh of electricity, enough for about 260,000 households annually.

Effect expected from Donghae1 Floating Offshore Wind Farm project

Reusing the existing platform jacket will reduce investment costs, and will also minimize marine pollution during decommissioning works. And this project will stimulate the industry related, expecting to create about 20,000 new employment during the construction period. With those positive effects, this project will fulfill Government’s 'Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan', and global trend of greenhouse gas reduction as well.

Installing LIDAR system (Wind condition measuring instrument) in October 2018, KNOC has worked with Equinor and East-West Power, and passed the government preliminary feasibility study conducted by the Korea Development Institute in May 2021 and was granted a Electric Business License in Nov 2021, and is preparing the next stages, such as basic design, series of permits and etc, targetting commencement of commercial operation from 2026.
