Eco-friendly management thinking about the earth

Prevention of water quality and ocean pollution

For eliminating the high potential risks of ocean accidents due to increasing of storing and shipping of oil reserves, since the establishment of the Third Oil Reserve plan by the government, KNOC replaced the old buoy-type storing and shipping pier floating on the sea with a fixed jetty using stakes. After change, KNOC has been safely operating storing and shipping facilities on the ocean without severe ocean contamination accidents up to now by securing the stable berth of oil tankers. Moreover, KNOC implements and operates the accident prevention system for ocean facilities in order to minimize high potential accident risks, including the collision of vessels and oil spill during the storing or shipping oil reserve using oil tankers or offshore facilities in coastal stockpiling sites (Yeosu, Seosan, Geoje, Ulsan, Pyeongtaek). With such efforts, KNOC has achieved zero oil spills for 4 consecutive years.

Air Pollution Management

KNOC has been endeavoring to reduce the emission of air pollutants through various approaches. KNOC operates the Vapor Recovery Unit (VRU) and the Vapor Combustion Unit (VCU) for the disposing oil mist generated from storing and shipping oil. Moreover, KNOC minimizes the emission of air pollutants by continuously improving facilities, including wastewater treatment facility covers and odor control facilities.

Soil and Underground Water Pollution Prevention

KNOC improved the quality of drain water by advancing the wastewater treatment facility in the underground storage cavern, secured sealing safety by operating an underground water monitoring system and flow analysis, and enhanced emergency response ability by improving the operation method of control valves. Furthermore, KNOC devotes itself to preventing soil and underground water pollution by conducting preventive oil leakage checks of ground storage facilities holding oil spill drills, checking oil leakage detection holes, and increasing the oil pollution checks. In addition, KNOC checks site facilities every day, establishing site facility check standards to minimize soil pollution by oil facilities and operates preliminary check procedure for the prevention of soil pollution.

Chemicals Management

KNOC complies with the hazardous chemical handling standards and enhances the management of chemical facilities to prevent safety, health, and environment accidents which may occur while handling hazardous chemicals.

Waste Management

KNOC classifies waste per kind, stores it, and entrusts waste disposal treatment specialist for the disposing of or reuse of waste generated on sites. Moreover, KNOC continuously endeavors to reduce the amount of waste generatedby setting a waste discharge goal every year.

Enhancement of Environment Management Ability

KNOC provides regular education programs on a variety of pollution prevention methods, energy management, and site safety and health to intensify the environment and health and safety management ability of the environment staff per business. In addition, KNOC conducts on-site education for the annual environment management and operation plan and HSE-interested fields organizedper business. For increasing environmental awareness on construction sites, KNOC monitors environment management activities of partners on a regular basis.

Progressive Implementation of Environment Policies

Disclosure of Environment Information

KNOC transparently discloses all information related to environment management activities including resource and energy saving and the reduction of emission of environmental pollutants to ¡®Environment Information Disclosure System¡¯ of the Ministry of Environment.

Estimation of Environment Costs

KNOC estimates the environment management costs generated through the environment management activities on an objective basis and endeavors to find more effective environment management approaches and to reduce unnecessary budgets by conducting an environment management cost analysis.
